The City

A knock came on the door. I was surprised that our taxi driver was to be a woman. Not that female taxi drivers are unheard of; just in that in all of my many taxi journeys in this city, she was my first.

Out we went into the, bracing, cold night air. Freya and Anna settled, elegantly in the back and I up front next to the driver.

“Where can I take you beautiful ladies?” she asked, ignoring my presence. I didn’t really mind as I’m sure she had taken in the radiance that was Freya and Anna. I seemed, in their presence distinctly irrelevant. Mind you, I was looking and feeling pretty damned good myself.

“Just drop us in the centre of town, please,” said Anna. She was in a decisive mood. The journey to the city centre from my house is around sixteen kilometres and takes up to half an hour. Thankfully this city is not blighted, like so many by excessive traffic, due to the small population, public transport that actually tries to work for people and not just for those who seek to make far too much money through the provision of necessities and also through sensible road building. During the journey I tried not to think that Freya would be departing tomorrow morning and listened to my sister and her chatting amiably on the back seat. I noticed and slightly envied the taxi driver, who was able to and did look in her mirror at the two of them. The driver seemed remarkably concentrated on the job in hand and made no attempt to engage me in conversation. I wondered if Freya and Anna had made sure of a female taxi driver, one of them by means of the aurora borealis and the other by her smartphone.

She dropped us, as requested in the centre of town. As I reached into my pocket to bring out my hefty wad of notes, the driver said:

“No need tonight, love,” she had definitely been inducted into the sisterhood.

As I stashed my money back in my pocket I was aware that there were a considerable amount of people milling around the city square where we had been dropped. It was a Friday evening and it is always busy here but this was really busy. It is difficult to put a precise figure on the number and I was aware of those news reports of demonstrations where the demonstrators claim that their numbers were a million and the Police claim that there were about two hundred and fifty. My guess is around a thousand people were milling, though milling expectantly. Something was going to happen.

The something that happened was Freya.

Freya had climbed onto the narrow wall surrounding the fountains in the city square and was about to...make a speech. It was then that I realised that of the one thousand and three people there, ninety per cent were female with just a few sheepish male appendages. I hoped that Freya would not embarrass herself and that her audience would not whoop in the style of American sports fans.
